At 8:30 a.m. on December 29, 1989, an Upper Paxton Township home, a two-story house situated at the end of a long lane along West Matterstown Road near Klinger Road, had a fire that started in the basement, apparently caused by a wood-burning stove. Firefighters laid 1,500 feet of 5-inch diameter hose from a portable pond set up on West Matterstown Road to the fire. Tanker trucks shuttled water from a dam about a mile away. The fire was brought under control in 1? hours. Equipment remained on the scene for nearly eight hours to douse hot spots. Millersburg, Halifax, Berrysburg, Elizabethville, and Lykens firefighters responded. Millersburg Fire Chief, Robert Lehman Sr, said it was Millersburg Fire Company's first attempt with large diameter hose.
