|Railroad Bridge Fire

The railroad bridge across the Susquehanna River six miles west of Harrisburg was discovered to be on fire at about 3 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 1868. Before the fire could be extinguished, five spans were destroyed. The fire was believed to have been started by sparks from the engine of the Baltimore Express train that passed over the bridge, going west, a few minutes before the fire was discovered.
