A deadly fire occurred at the 15-story Winecoff Hotel in downtown Atlanta on December 7, 1946. 119 people died and 91 were injured. The fire is believed to have accidentally started on the third floor, possibly due to careless smoking, but there is also a theory of arson. It remains the deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, and prompted many changes in building codes across the country.
