Fire damaged the Lykens Baptist Church parsonage. The estimated damage was between $2,000 and $3,000.

Collapse w/ Entrapment, Metal Industries

Lykens and Millersburg fire companies and EMS responded to assist Elizabethville's fire company at the Metal Industries plant, East of Elizabethville Borough for a report of a building collapse with entrapment. On arrival, it was found that MI had constructed an elevated storage area inside the former Gordon Peters Plant and it had collapsed from being overloaded. Several employees were tangled in the mess of stored material and lumber, but no serious injuries were found.

Flooding, Lykens Hotel (Box 22-11)

Company 22 was dispatched to the Lykens Hotel for flooding. Engines 22 and 22-1 responded, and on arrival found that the water line going into the basement from the water main had frozen and broken, filling the entire basement with water to the point where water was running out the cellar door and into the street. Both engines pumped from draft out of the basement to the storm drain in front of the hotel, pumping out approximately 330,000 gallons of water. Water Authority members on scene shut off the water to the Hotel at the curb box. The pumping took approximately four hours to complete.

Companies 27, 26, 28, 21, Northumberland 65 , Schuylkill 14 and Truck 22 dispatched for a reported structure fire on Bellevue Road in Lykens Township. Truck 22 was about to respond with 7 when Chief 27 placed the box in service, controlled burn.

Medical Assist for extrication, 419 Elizabeth Street (Box 24-1)

At the request of Williamstown EMS, Truck 22 dispatched class one to 419 Elizabeth Street in Williamstown to extricate a patient from a second floor bedroom window. Truck 22 responded with 7, and on arrival, backed down Elizabeth Street from Grant Street to side A, and set up to go to the front porch roof with the boom. Patient was removed by way of a second floor window and lowered to the awaiting EMS crew for transport to the hospital, and then the Truck went available.

Lift Assist, 201 Main St (Box 22-1)

Company 22 requested by Chief 22-2 to assist with lifting a person at 201 Main Street in Lykens. Chief 22, Lykens PD and 3 additional firefighters responded POV to the scene. Crews assisted with moving the person to a chair, and went available.

Animal Rescue, Keystone and Washington Sts. (Box S.C.)

At the request of Schuylkill Chief 650, Truck 22 dispatched class three to assist Muir Engine 650 in Porter Township at the intersection of Keystone Street and Washington Street for an animal rescue. Truck 22 responded with 4, and on arrival, placed a 35 foot extension ladder in service against a tree and was able to encourage the victim to self extricate. Command then placed the Truck available.

Company 21, Engine 265 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 4955 Route 209 in Washington Township at the Tractor Supply store for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 7 and was canceled enroute by command 21.

Chimney Fire - Jackson Twp, Dauphin Co, PA

A working chimney fire occurred at 1260 Enders Road, in Jackson Township. Flames were flashing down the fireplace as the fire could be heard roaring inside, creating a lot of hot embers. Firefighters arrived and extingushed the fire. Utility 21 was called to the scene to use the thermal imaging camera to help determine if the fire was out.

Vehicle Accident - Jefferson Township, Dauphin Co, PA

A 1989 Mercury Tracer was travelling east on Powells Valley Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver was treated at the scene by personnel from Medic 6.

Jamestown Fire - Jamestown, VA

On January 7, 1608, fire destroyed all the living quarters in the fort at Jamestown, Virginia. The fire was accidentally started by one of the colonists. The fort was repaired in March.

De Rijp Fire - De Rijp, Netherlands
Detail >>
A heavy storm passed through the Netherlands on Januar 7, 1654. Afterwards, a fire was discovered in thevillage of De Rijp. The fire destroyed two-thirds of the village.

Krebs Mine Explosion - Krebs, OK

In southeastern Oklahoma at the turn of the 19th century, much of the land belonged to Native Americans and was exempt from U.S. federal government laws and regulations. The Osage Coal & Mining Company?s No. 11 mine was notorious for its poor conditions. This led to a high turnover of workers, and the company routinely hired unskilled labor, providing little in the way of training. This was true for even the most dangerous jobs, like handling explosives and munitions. In the early evening of January 7, 1892, several hundred workers were mining the No. 11 mine when an inexperienced worker accidentally set off a stash of explosives. Approximately 100 miners were burned or buried in the explosion. Another 150 workers suffered serious injuries.

Mercy Hospital Fire - Davenport, IA

Fire broke out in the 60-year old frame building of Mercy Hospital's St. Elizabeth mental ward on the 19?F night of January 7, 1950. The fire started on the first floor and shot up the dumb waiter to all three floors. The ward was occupied by 63 women and three men, all insane or of irrational senility. Terrorstricken women screamed and pounded at wire mesh and steel bars of the windows. Many of then died before firefighters arrived. The three men patients broke out of their rooms and escaped, two by leaping from first-story windows. Firefighters stood on icy ladders and hacked with axes at the bars and screens to get inside. One woman was found two hours after the fire started. She was sitting calmly on her bed, her nightgown partially coated with ice and surrounded by fallen debris. A fireman asked her if she was all right. She replied, "I think so." She was led to a ladder and rescued. Of the ward's patients, 39 women had died. A 55-year old nurse had also died. She led some of her patients to safety and rushed back inside to saver more, never to return.
