Smoke in a Trailer, 99 Small Valley Rd (Box 19-21)

Engine and Tanker 22 were dispatched to a reported trailer on fire in Jefferson Township. Heavy snow at the time had made the road over the mountain between Lykens and Carsonville impassable. Because of this, Captain 22 canceled Company 22 before any response was attempted.

Smoke in Structure, 722 Mountain Street (Box 23-1)

Company 22 was dispatched to assist Companies 23, 24, and 21 with a report of smoke on the second floor of a residence in Wiconisco, with smoke alarms sounding. Engine 22 responded and staged at Pottsville and Maple Streets. Truck 22 also responded and staged behind Engine 22. Chief 23 held the box to Company 23, and all other units were placed in service.

Truck 22 was dispatched for a possible structure fire in Wayne Township. The truck was canceled while enroute.

Accident w/no inj, 4100 Powells Valley (Box 19-4)

As Truck-22 was returning from a previous call, they were beginning their assent of Lykens mountain when a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction passed by the Truck at a high rate of speed. As it entered the sweeping turn above Shultz's camp, the driver lost control and slid sideways through the turn, leaving the roadway and striking a tree before returning to the roadway perpendicular to the road. Having observed this activity in the rear view mirror, the driver of Truck-22, Chief 22-1, stopped the truck. Personnel exited the truck and proceeded back to where the vehicle had come to rest on the road. The driver was refusing treatment. Captain-22 notified Dauphin County of the incident and requested Engine-19 to respond, since this was their territory. They were also returning from the previous call and arrived on scene shortly thereafter. An EMS unit was requested to assess the driver and PSP was requested to the scene. After the arrival of EMS, PSP, and Engine-19, Truck-22 left the scene and returned to quarters out of service with a frozen throttle.

Set Up LZ for Life Lion, Williamstown Boro Bldg (Box 24-1)

Engine-22 was requested to assist Tanker-24 in setting up a landing zone for Life Lion helicopter to transport a patient from Williamstown EMS. Engine-22 responded with a crew of six and Chief-22 by POV. The engine crew assisted Company-24 with LZ setup, and were then released.

Outside Furnace Fire, 346 Azalea Drive (Box 66-3)

Tanker 22 was dispatched to assist Companies 66 and 24 on a reported outside furnace fire at 346 Azalea Drive in Rush Township. Tanker 22 responded with a crew of two, and was canceled while enroute.

AFA, 550 Main Street (Box 22-1)

Company 22, Engine 23, and Truck 20 for the out of service Truck 22 dispatched class one to the Mid Penn Bank in Lykens at 550 Main Street for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 22 went enroute POV and was advised that a cleaning person had accidentally activated the alarm, and he advised all units to hold in quarters while he proceeded in. Engine 22 held in quarters with 6, Engine 23 with 8, and Truck 20 held in quarters. After Chief 22 confirmed the accidental trip, he placed the box in service.

AFA, 120 Maple Lane (Box 24-3)

Truck 22 dispatched class one on the 24-3 box to 120 Maple Lane in Laurel Hills for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 7 and on arrival was advised by Command 24 to stage directly behind Engine 24 and hold their manpower. Structure was a 75 by 500 multi family apartment complex with a report of a fire alarm sounding for an hour. Command determined that it was a faulty detector and placed the box in service.

Chimney Fire, 31 Bixler Drive (Box S.C.)

Truck 22 dispatched class one to Schuylkill County Hubley Township at 31 Bixler Drive for a chimney fire. Truck 22 responded with 7 and Utility 22 with 4. Both units were canceled while enroute.

Medical Assist, 15 South 2nd St (Box 22-1)

At the request of Medic 6 Company 22 dispatched class one to 15 South Second Street at the Rattling Creek Apartments for the Knox Boy key. Utility 22 responded with 3 and the key and on arrival was advised by EMS that they had gained entry and our services were no longer needed. Company 22 went available.

Electrical Fire, 132 Main Street (Box 22-1)

Engine 22, Engine and Rescue 23, Rescue 21 and Truck 20 for the out of service Truck 22 dispatched class one to 132 Main Street in Lykens for an outlet sparking. Engine 22 responded with 4 and one member was POV on scene. On arrival at a 22 foot by 47 foot one story single family dwelling with nothing showing from the exterior the Engine staged on side B with a hydrant across the street. Investigation found that the occupant attempted to thaw frozen pipes using a hair dryer and the ground fault outlet popped and tripped. A TIC was used to check temps in the area of the outlet with all readings normal. No smoke or haze noted. Command held the box to Engine 22. Further investigation found nothing out of the ordinary. Command placed the box available.

Engine 22 dispatched class one as next due Engine to 10094 Route 209 in Williams Township for a gas leak. Command 24 placed the Engine in service prior to response.

On January 18, 1958, the frame house belonging to Mrs. Verna Moyer, in Dauphin, Pennsylvania was destroyed by fire. The loss was $5,000.00. The Dauphin-Middle Paxton Fire Company was assisted by the Rescue from Estherton Fire Company. (Rescue Co. 37)

New Cross Fire - London, England

A devastating house fire which killed 13 young people during a birthday party in New Cross, south east London occurred on Sunday January 18, 1981. The party was a joint birthday celebration for Yvonne Ruddick (who died) and Angela Jackson (who survived) and was held at 439 New Cross Road, going on throughout the night. The initial police suspicion was that the party had been bombed either as a revenge attack or to stop the noise.

Lightning strikes started 160 fires in the Brindabella and Namadgi National Parks to the west of the Australian Capital Territory. High winds and high temperatures pushed the fires. The fires entered the suburbs of Canberra (Australia's Capital) on January 18, 2003. In the ten hours after that, four people died and more than 500 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Almost 70% of the Australian Capital Territory?s pasture, forests and nature parks were severely damaged, and most of Mount Stromlo Observatory was destroyed.
