Barn Fire, East of Wiconisco |

| | A Fire occurred in the barn owned by Edwin Kerstetter, east of Wiconisco, on the morning of Friday, March 30, 1934. It was discovered by several men who were driving to their employment at the Williamstown colliery. They awakened the Kerstetter family, who lived opposite the barn on the other side of the highway. Upon their arrival at the barn, 13 head of cattle and six horses were removed. To the alarm for help, the fire companies of Williamstown, Wiconisco, and Lykens responded. The flames were extinguished before serious damage resulted. Addition Notes: This was the second barn fire east of Wiconisco that morning. The Wiconisco fire company responded to an earlier barn fire but was unable to save the building or content of lumber, a loss of $700. The two fires were a result of arson. Clarence Travits, age 25, from near Williamstown was charged with the crime. |

| | Company 22 was dispatched to a report of a pedestrian struck on Main Street. The company was also advised to have fire police close down Main Street between Pine and Market Streets. Engine 22 responded and assisted with closing Main Street. After the incident the company was released by EMS and went available. |

| | Truck-22 was dispatched to Mifflin Township on a Berrysburg 26-2 box for a report of smoke in a structure. Truck-22 responded with a crew of five and Chief-22 responded POV. The Truck arrived on scene and was then placed in service by Command-26. |

| | Companies 24, 23, 66, and Schuylkill 66, along with Truck 20 (replacing out of service Truck 22) were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 683 East Market Street in Williams Township. First report from a firefighter on the scene was smoke coming from the eaves and roof of the house, a working fire. Engine and Tanker 22 were dispatched when Company 24 failed to respond after six minutes. Engine 22 responded with a crew of five, and Tanker 22 responded with a crew of two. Crews arrived on scene and assisted with suppression, fire attack, and control. Chief 23 had command. Company 22 was then released along with Truck 20 and Company 21. |

| | Company 22 was dispatched to the former Helt's Furniture Store building for an alarm sounding. Neighbors reported it had been sounding for some time before someone called 911. Engine and Truck 22 responded, and the crews forced entry into the building. No fire was found. The crews suspected that the smoke detector activation was caused from a dirt condition in the building. Chief 22 had command, and after investigating the premises and contacting the owner, he released the company. |

| | Companies 24, 23, Schuylkill 647, and Truck 22 dispatched to 296 Dayton Street in Williams Township for a reported structure fire. Initial report was wires burning on the exterior of the house. Engine 23 arrived on scene and reported a working structure fire. Truck 22 responded with 5, and on arrival, took side A. Crew laddered the front of the building and sent a crew to the roof and cut a vent hole while 23 crew members knocked down the bulk of the fire in the interior. Engine and Tanker 22 were eventually dispatched for units that had failed, but were replaced as there was no further crew available. Companies 21, 26, and Schuylkill 66-10 and 650 were on scene as well, along with EMS from 24. Crew assisted with extensive salvage and overhaul of the building until released by command. |

| | Company 22 dispatched class 3 to 222 Lawley Road for a report of a tree down across power lines. Chief 22-1 and Lieutenant 22-1 responded POV to the scene with Engine 22 with 5 and Utility 22 with 4. On arrival, the crew cleared the tree from the roadway, called in the pole number for relay to PPL, and went available. |

| | Engine 22, Engine 23, and Truck 20 dispatched class one to the Reiff and Nestor Plant at 50 Reiff Street in Lykens for an automatic fire alarm, water flow alarm from the warehouse. Chief 22 responded POV, Engine 22 with 6, and Engine 23 with 6. Chief 22 arrived on scene with normal conditions and placed Truck 20 in service and had Engine 23 stand by the hydrant at South Second and Pine Streets. Engine 22 arrived on the office side of the plant. Chief 22 met with plant management and after inspecting the warehouse area and finding nothing, placed the box available.

| | Engine and Truck 22 dispatched class one on the 23-1 box to 202 Wiconisco street in Wiconisco township for a reported garage fire. As the Engine and Truck were pulling out of the station Chief 23-2 arrived on location and found a controlled burn. The box was then placed in service. |
