The West German Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, burned on April 24, 1975, after political terrorists set off explosives. The Red Army Faction, a postwar West German militant left-wing group, that described itself as a communist "urban guerrilla" group engaged in armed resistance, while described by the West German government as a terrorist group, stormed the West Germany Embassy and took eleven hostages in an attempt to force the West German government to release RAF members who were held in prison. The government refused to negotiate. Two hostages were killed before RAF explosives accidentally detonated, starting a fire that eventually destroyed the embassy. One of the RAF members, startled by the explosion, accidentally dropped a hand grenade and blew himself up. The explosion destroyed the top floor of the embassy and ended the takeover, which had occurred twelve hours earlier. There were no other deaths.
