Search Detail, Mine Cave-In

On May 17, 1957, David Snyder was caught in a cave-in at his independent mine on Sharp Mountain. Rescue operations began immediately in an attempt to save him. However, a higher authority had already willed the destiny of this man, for on Monday evening, May 20, 1957, search operations were concluded with the recovery of his body.

Brush Fire, Wiconisco (Box 23-)

ATV Accident w/ Injuries, Wiconisco Sewer Plant (Box 23-2)

Engine 22 was dispatched along with Company 23 to a report of an ATV accident just off Market Street, south of Pottsville Street, near the Wiconisco Sewage Treatment Facility. Engine 22 was canceled by Chief 23 prior to its arrival on scene.

Accident with injuries, Main & West Streets (Box 22-1)

Company-22, Engine-23, and Medic-6 were dispatched for an accident with injuries at the intersection of Main and West Streets. There were two vehicles on the roadway with no injuries. Chief-22, on the scene, held the call to EMS and Engine-22. The engine crew secured the vehicles and assisted with traffic control. Speedy Dry was used to clean up spilled liquids and the vehicles' battery cables were cut.
2008
Structure Fire, 543 E Market Street (Box 27-1)

Companies 27, 26, 28, Truck 22, and Northumberland Engine 65 were dispatched to Reed's Inn at 543 East Market Street in Gratz for a reported structure fire. A caller reported that he lived on the second floor, above the restaurant, and his place was filling up with smoke. Truck 22 responded with a crew of seven, set up on side A, and the crew went to the first floor porch roof to cut a vent hole. This was followed with two additional vent holes cut in the roof above the bar on the D side of the structure. Heavy smoke was pouring from the building. The origin appeared to be in the area near the bar, with damage estimates above $300,000.00. The truck crew remained on the scene setting up negative pressure fans on the second floor and assisting with other ventilation, until released by command.

Medical Assist, 617 Arch Street (Box 22-1)

Company 22 dispatched class three to 617 Arch Street in Lykens to assist EMS with lifting. Engine 22 responded with 4 and Chief 22 POV. On arrival, crew assisted Medic 6 with moving a large patient from her home to their litter and into their transport unit. Command then placed the Company available.
2016
Smoke in a Structure, 326 North Second Street (Box 22-1)

The 22-1 box dispatched class one for a report of smoke in s structure at 326 North Second Street, bringing Company 22, Engine and Rescue 23, Engine 24 and Rescue 21 and EMS. Engine 22 responded with 6, Truck 22 with 5, Utility 22 with 2, Engine 23 with 5, Engine 24 with 4, and Rescue 21 with 7. Engine 22 proceeded in from Market to North Second and took the hydrant at North Second and West Street. Truck 22 came in from Edward Street to the address, and Engine 23 staged on West Street at North Second. Rescue 21 staged behind Truck 22, and Engine 24 and Rescue 23 staged behind Engine 22. On arrival, the address was a 2 1/2 story wood frame duplex with nothing showing. Chief 23 had arrived on scene, and went interior and did not find anything. The Truck crew laddered the building while a crew from the Engine with a TIC entered the structure to check the rest of the building. Lieutenant 22 and a crew from Engine 24 entered 328 North Second to check it and found nothing. The crews investigated and found nothing. Command placed the box in service.

1934
Shirley Davis Burned - Klingerstown, PA

On Thursday morning, May 17, 1934, four year old Shirley Davis, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Davis, was playing with her sister Naomi and cousin Elsie in a small house near her home in Klingerstown when her clothing caught fire. Her father discovered the child in flames running from the playhouse and succeeded in smothering the fire only after burning his hands. The child was rendered first aid and rushed to Fountain Springs Hospital in Ashland. She died from her burns on Wednesday, May 23, 1934.
