Structure Fire, 200 Wiconisco Street (Box 23-1)

Company-22 and Company-24 were dispatched to assist Company-23 on a house fire at 200 Wiconisco Street in Wiconisco Township. The 2?-story wood frame balloon construction single home, was struck by lightning, causing the fire. Engine-23 connected to a hydrant in the 100 block of Wiconisco Street and took side-A/B, and the crew stretched a line in the front door. Engine-22 took side-A/D, and the crew stretched another line from Engine-23 inside the home through the side porch on side-D to the second floor. Truck-22 parked in the 100 block of Wiconisco Street, and the crew assisted the Engine-22 crew laddering the building and going interior to check for extensions. Engine-24 staged at Zealot and Wiconisco Streets and sent a crew inside. Company-21 and Company-20 were staged at Zealot and Pottsville Streets. There was smoke pushing from the A/B corner on two floors. Crews opened up the walls inside and pulled ceilings to dig out the fire. The two man crew from Medic-6, packed up with full gear (in fire attack mode), went to the attic and did horizontal ventilation. Fire traveled in the walls up the A/D corner from the ground floor to the attic, but was kept confined to that area. Extensive overhaul was done, with crews rotating out on a regular basis. There was great teamwork among the crews, with an excellent stop by Company-23.
2006
Electrocution, 225 South Second Street (Box 22-1)

Company-22 was dispatched to assist EMS with a report of a patient electrocuted at 225 South Second Street. Truck-22 responded with a crew of seven and Chief-22 responded POV. Upon arrival, the crew found a one-story mobile home with several people waiting outside. The patient was already being tended to in a Medic-6 unit. The patient informed the crew that she attempted to plug in a curling iron when she received a shock through her hand. Inspection of interior found that the circuit breaker in the rear bedroom had tripped and there was a curling iron on the floor, unplugged. The outlet was slightly charred and an alarm clock, also plugged into the same outlet, had a slightly charred plug. Removal of the outlet cover revealed a broken and charred outlet. The property owner was advised to not use that circuit and to contact an electrician to replace the outlet. The company went available.

Propane leak, 200 Kocher Lane - Walmart (Box 21-5)

Truck 22 was requested by Command 21 to respond class 3 to a reported propane gas leak at the Walmart shopping center in Washington Township. Engine and Rescue 21, under the command of Chief 21, were on scene and investigating a report of a strong odor of propane in the store at the A/D corner. Investigation could not find a source inside the store. Chief 21 requested Truck 22 to assist with checking out the roof above the A/D corner. Truck 22 responded with a crew of seven, set up on side A, and sent two members to the roof to investigate. They found a strong gas odor in the area of one of the roof HVAC units. The remainder of the truck crew went inside to assist with searching the entire warehouse and deli area of the store for any odors. They found none. The roof HVAC unit was isolated and Chief 21, after conferring with store personnel, placed the box in service. All units went available.

Medical Assist, 646 North Street (Box 22-1)

Company 22 was dispatched to assist EMS with a patient in respiratory distress at 646 North Street. Truck 22 responded with a crew of seven, and Chief 22 responded to the scene POV. On arrival, the crew assisted EMS with patient care, packaging, and transfer to an ambulance to be taken to a helicopter landing zone at the UDA high school for transfer to Life Lion.

Automatic Fire Alarm, 9781 Route 209 (Box 24-2)

Company 24, Engine 23, and Truck 22 dispatched to the Twin Valley Alliance Church on Route 209 for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 5, and was canceled by Chief 24 while enroute.

Medical Assist, 15 South 2nd St (Box 22-1)

At the request of Medic 6 Company 22 dispatched class three to the Rattling Creek Apartments at 15 South Second Street in Lykens for forcible entry. Truck 22 responded with 5 and on arrival used the Knox box key to gain entry to the apartment for EMS. After assisting with transferring the patient to their litter and transport unit the box was placed available.

Structure Fire, 88 Hemlock Road (Box 19-2)

Companies 19, 21, 22, 23, 26, 216, 29 dispatched class one to 88 Hemlock Road in Jefferson Township on the 19-2 box to the Hemlock Girl Scout Camp for a fire in the dining room. Truck 22 responded with 6 and Engine 22 with 3. While enroute Command 19 downgraded our response to class three. As both units were approaching the scene they were placed in service.

Structure Fire, 1131 Stitzer Road (Box N.C.)

Truck 22 along with Companies 27 and 28 dispatched class one to Northumberland County on a Klingerstown box to 1131 Stitzer Road for a structure fire. Truck 22 responded with 7 and Utility 22 with 3. While enroute Command 65 placed the Company available, fire was out.
2022
AFA, 50 Reiff Street (Box 22-1)

Company 22 and Engine 23 alerted class one to the Reiff and Nestor plant at 50 Reiff Street in Lykens for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 22 respond POV to the scene. While members were preparing to respond from Station 22 dispatch advised of a second call for a cardiac arrest on North Street (see call 60). Utility 22 responded to the cardiac arrest with 2 and Engine 22 responded to the AFA with 4. Chief 22 arrived on scene on the A side of the plant with normal conditions. Engine 23 also arrived on scene. Members made their way into the facility and found alarms sounding. No issues or problems were found on site. The plant was turned back over to the plant manager and command cleared the box.
2022
Cardiac arrest - AED response, 435 North Street (Box 22-1)

While members were preparing to respond to the AFA at Reiff and Nestor (see call 59) the county advised Chief 22 that a second call was being received for a cardiac arrest at 435 North Street in Lykens. Rescue 23 was all ready on the street to the AFA and was diverted to the cardiac arrest. Utility 22 went enroute with 2. Rescue and Utility arrived on scene and began resuscitation efforts. After several rounds of CPR and one delivered shock pulses were detected. EMS from Medic 6 arrived and the crews assisted them with patient care and transfer of the patient to their transport unit. Fire units were then placed available.
2024
AFA, 1077 West Market St (Box 24-3)

Company 24, Engine and Rescue 23 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 1077 West Market street in Williams Township for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 3 and on arrival at a 32 foot by 57 foot two story single family dwelling took side B. Rescue 23 had side A and Engine 24 side D. Investigation of the interior found no alarms sounding. Command placed the Truck available.

Vehicle Accident - Williams Twp, Dauphin Co, PA

Two cars, one driven by Marlin Esterline of Wiconisco and the other by Edward Smith of Williamstown, collided on Monday evening, July 16, 1934, near the Bob Malick farm east of Wiconisco. Esterline was driving west when Smith entered the highway from the Dayton ball park road. In the impact, Smith suffered a laceration of the head. Both cars were damaged.

Delbert Lupold Fire
Detail >>
Ten-year-old Delbert Lupold accidentally set himself on fire. He had plunged a stick into a can of alcohol, splashing some of the alcohol onto his clothing. He then attempted to light the stick on fire. The fire spread to his clothing. He was taken to the Pottsville Hospital in critical condition.

Messersmith Apartments Fire - Elizabethville, PA

During a storm on July 17, 1976, lightning struck the Messersmith apartments on South Market Street, Elizabethville, causing a fire. Firefighters had difficulty checking the third floor because remodelings had covered up the fold-down stairs that was its entrance.

Elitch Gardens Fire - Denver, CO

On July 16, 1944 at Elitch Gardens Amusement Park in Denver, Colorado there was a fire in the Old Mill Boat ride, which features a waterway ride through a dark tunnel exhibiting lighted scenes of fairytale characters. The 200 foot long building was constructed in 1914. Six people died due to smoke inhalation.

Mine Explosion - Hegins Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA

A gas explosion occurred in a coal mine of the Harner Coal Company on July 16, 1969. The mine was located southwest of Valley View, in Bear Valley. The explosion occurred around 7 a.m. One miner, Marvin Shadle, age 36, from Hegins, was killed, and six other miners were injured. The injured miners were taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Pottsville by the Buffington and Miller ambulances, where they were treated for body burns. Shadle's body was recovered in mid-morning.
