Companies 22 & 23 were dispatched to a reported structure fire at the Brobroski residence in Lykens Borough. Engine 22 responded with a crew of seven and accessed the scene via Pine Street from Main Street and found a 2? story wood frame single family dwelling with fire coming from the second floor and attic windows. Engine 23 responded and staged at the intersection of Pine and North Second Streets and sent their crew into the front entrance on the first floor. Engine 22-1 responded with a crew of two, hit the hydrant in front of the former elementary school, and laid into the rear of side 2 of the structure, where they placed a 2? inch line in service. The crew from Engine 22 laddered side 3 of the building and entered the second floor from a balcony. The crew advanced to the base of the attic staircase, where they were met by heavy fire. Chief 22 struck the second alarm, bringing Companies 21 and 24. The crew ran out of air before advancing up the stairwell, and a second team took their place. The staircase was burnt out and advancement was difficult. Crews from Company 21 and 24 arrived and assisted with interior operations. Crews made headway to the attic, and extinguished the bulk of the fire. Extensive overhaul was needed, with the attic and most of the second floor having been heavily damaged. There was smoke and water damage to first floor as well, and damage to the side 2 portion of the roof, where fire had burned through. Crews continued with overhaul until they were released by command.
Engine 22 was dispatched for a car on fire in front of Family Dollar. Engine 22 responded and, on arrival, found a Chrysler LeBaron that had an engine compartment fire, which had been put out. There was minimal damage. Chief 22 placed the box in service.
Company 22 dispatched class three at the request of Medic 6 to 801 Market Street in Lykens for a medical assist for lifting. Chief 22-2 responded POV to the scene and Utility 22 went enroute with 2. On arrival the crew assisted EMS with getting a patient back up and into their home, and then went available.
Company 27, Truck 22 and Rescue 23 dispatched class one to 335 West Middle Road in Lykens Township for a possible haz mat incident. Truck 22 responded with 4 and was canceled by command 27 while enroute.
A speeding express train careened off its track as it entered a station in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, on August 30, 1974. 121 passengers were killed and 97 others were injured.
