Shortly after arrival of Company-22's apparatus, chief 22-1 held the box to Company-22 and canceled all other units. Investigation determined that the caller smelled the heat in their apartment coming on for the first time in the fall and heard an intermittently beeping smoke alarm with a weak battery in the second floor hallway. The combination of the heat odor and the audible alarm caused the concern. After removing the battery from the smoke detector, the company went available.
