2006
Odor Investigation, 540 South Second Street (Box 22-1)
Detail >>
At the request of on-scene EMS, Company 22 was dispatched class-3 to 540 South Second Street to investigate an odor inside the residence. Engine 22 responded with a crew of six to the property, which is located next to the fire station. Chiefs 22-1 & 22-2 responded POV. The crew was met on the scene by personnel from Medic 6 and a representative from Tower Sales, who stated that the occupant was found in the home with a strong odor of fuel oil present. He discovered that the furnace had malfunctioned and misfired, causing the strong fuel oil smell. The crew vented the house. Members walked to the station and brought Truck 22, which was set up in the alley behind the home to check the chimney. The chimney was a 25-foot free standing structure in the yard, located about 15 feet from the house. The chimney was found to be clear, but the horizontal pipe running to it from the house could not be checked. The furnace repairman placed the furnace out of service and the resident's daughter was summoned to the scene to take charge of the occupant. Units were cleared from the scene by command and went available.
