Fire alarm sounded at 6:20 o'clock PM on December 28, 1900. The fire was at Jacob Werner's house. The company responded and made connections. But, no water was used. The cause of the fire was a lighted match that set fire to a fringe on a couch. Damage was estimated at $20.
Companies 27, 26, 28, Northumberland 65, and Truck 22 dispatched to the Gratz Park Terrace Apartments, Apartment 109, at 100 South West Street in Gratz for an electrical fire. Truck 22 responded with 7 and Chief 22 POV, and were canceled by command as they turned onto Crossroads Road in Loyalton.
At the request of Lykens PD, Truck 22 dispatched class three to the Gully Building at 508 Market Street in Lykens to assist with a safety hazard. High winds during the day caused a part of the gutter on the roof line of the large green building on the square to come off and it was dangling over phone lines onto the street. Truck 22 responded with 7, Utility 22 with 2, and Chief 22 POV. On arrival, the crew sent the tower to the roof and pulled the gutter down, and then went available.

Accident with injuries, 6349 Powells Valley Rd (Box 216-8)
Engine 22, Rescue 23, and Medic 6 dispatched class one to Powells Valley Road in Jackson Township just past Lykens Road for a single vehicle accident with injuries. Chief 22 responded POV followed by Engine 22 with 6 and Utility 22 with 3. Six additional members responded POV as well. On arrival the crew found one vehicle off the road in the brush with one person confined in the back seat. A second vehicle not involved in the accident had the second occupant sitting in their car just down from the crashed car. Chief 22 requested one helicopter, and when patient evaluations were done on both patients a second helo was requested by Medic 6. Rescue 23 crew popped a door and assisted with extricating one patient from the rear of the vehicle. A protection hand line was pulled from Engine 22 and manned. After extricating and placing both patients in the Medic 6 unit, they were taken to the LZ at Station 23 where Engine 23 handled the landing of both helicopters. Both patients were loaded into helicopters and taken to the hospital. Rescue 23 was released from the accident scene. Engine 22 and Utility 22 remained to assist PSP and Recovery 21 with investigation and removal of the car. After the roadway was cleared the Company was placed available.
On December 28, 1999. there was a commercial structure fire in Northumberland County near Klingerstown in the area of Pumpkin Center Road. A three-bay garage with an attached workshop was found with a working fire. Crews made entry and held the fire to the workshop area. Fire Companies on the scene were Companies 65 )Klingerstown), 28 (Pillow), 27 (Gratz), and Schuykill 10.
The Tay Rail Bridge is a railway bridge approximately two and a quarter miles long that spans the Firth of Tay in Scotland, between the city of Dundee and the suburb of Wormit in Fife. During a violent storm on the evening of December 28, 1879, the center section of the bridge, known as the "High Girders", collapsed, taking with it a train that was running on its single track. More than 75 lives were lost.
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Sicily killed over 100,000 people and destroyed several towns on December 28, 1908. The earthquake shook the city for a full 35 seconds. An eight-foot tsunami crashed about 100 yards inland, but most of the deaths were a result of buildings collapsing. A military barracks gave way, killing nearly everyone inside; in total, about one of ever three residents perished. All electricity, gas, water and sewage lines were destroyed. 87 of the 91 churches in Messina were demolished. The last survivors--two children--were pulled out a remarkable 18 days after the quake. There was also widespread destruction and death on other parts of the island, bringing the overall death toll to 120,000. In Reggio, a 15-foot deadly tsunami came ashore. Two hours later, the tsunami hit Malta.

Paradise Family Restaurant Fire - Schuylkill Haven, PA
The Paradise Family Restaurant at the crossroads of Routes 183 and 61 in Schuylkill Haven was gutted by an early morning fire on December 28, 2000. All three of Schuylkill Haven's fire companies responded, and the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes, however, the eatery suffered severe damage. The fire started in the original diner part of the restaurant after which it rolled out into the newer dining room. The building suffered extensive smoke damage, and smoke contaminated all the stored food. The fire, which caused an estimated $500,000 damage, was an arson.
