1678
First US Fire Engine Company - Boston, MA

1967
Apollo 1 Fire - Kennedy Space Center, FL
Detail >>
Gus Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee were killed in a fire during a test and training exercise of the Apollo 1 space mission at Pad 34 of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 27, 1967. The fire occurred in the command module atop a Saturn rocket. The ignition source of the fire was never determined. But the fire spread rapidly in the high-pressure 100% oxygen environment. Just 17 seconds after the transmission of its discovery, communications from the astronauts stopped. Toxic smoke from the leaking command module and malfunctioning gas masks thwarted the ground crew from quickly accessing the fire. It took five minutes to open the hatch, by which time the fire in the command module had gone out.

He was singing "Billie Jean" for a Pepsi Cola commercial when the special effects went wrong - a firework display erupted behind him, showering him in sparks and setting his hair on fire. He covered his burning hair with his jacket as stage hands rushed to help him.
2002
Ikeja Explosions and Panic - Lagos, Nigeria
Detail >>
On Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2002, a street market was set up near the Ikeja Armory, just north of the city center of Lagos, when fire broke out. The fire spread to the munitions area of the armory and caused a huge explosion around 6 p.m. Several square blocks were leveled by the blast, which killed about 300 people. The blast was heard 30 miles away and windows were broken and homes collapsed as far away as ten miles. Making matters worse, the explosion sent munitions debris raining down over the north side of Lagos. This caused fires to break out all over the city. The explosions and fires caused a general panic in part of the city. On the other side of the Oke-Afa canal, which runs North-South through the city, is a banana plantation. Much of the panicking crowd thought they could seek refuge in the banana fields, but failed to remember the location of the canal in the dark. As thousands of people pushed toward the fields, at least 600 people were drowned in the canal. Stampedes in other parts of the city killed hundreds more, most of them children separated from their parents. Approximately 5,000 people were injured in total, overwhelming the city?s hospitals. Explosions continued throughout the night and into the following afternoon. Due to a lack of firefighters in Lagos, the blazes were not contained until more than 24 hours later. At least 12,000 people were left homeless by the disaster. More than 1,000 people were killed.
