Company 22 and Medic 6 dispatched class one to the yard behind 300 Main Street in Lykens for a reported explosion with fire and a burn victim. Chief 22-1 responded POV to the scene, Engine 22 went enroute with 6 and Truck 22 with 4 and 6 members went POV to the scene. On arrival the fire was out and a burn victim was being attended to by EMS. Crew assisted EMS with patient care and packaging and transfer to their unit for transport to Station 23 and the arrival of Life Lion. Company 22 was then placed available.
The 22-1 box dispatched class one to 530 South Second Street in Lykens for a structure fire. Chief 22 responded POV, and on his arrival at the address he found a 2 story wood frame single family dwelling 15 by 30 foot with a stove fire on the C side in the kitchen. Truck 22 responded from the station 3 doors away and arrived on side A. Engine 23 responded with 3 and approached from the Market Street side and laid a 5 inch line from the hydrant at the train station to behind the Truck. Engines 24 and 27 (replacing Engine 21 all ready on another call in place of the out of service Engine 22) responded along with Rescue 23 and Tower City EMS. A crew took a can thru the front door and knocked down the bulk of the fire on the stove while other members laddered the building and backed up the first in crew. A crew from Engine 23 brought a charged inch and one half to the C side of the structure by the back door but it was not needed. The crew disconnected the stove and removed it to the back yard while other crew members checked for fire extension and pulled the ceiling. Command held the box to companies 22 and 23. PPV fans were set up to vent the structure which was charged with smoke thru out the first and second floors. Company 23 was placed in service after they had their lines picked up. Two dogs were rescued from the upstairs and returned to the owner. After ventilation was complete and equipment picked up, the box was placed available.
2018
Accident with injuries, 219 Main Street (Box 22-1)
Company 22 and Rescue 23 and Medic 6 dispatched class one to the area in front of 219 Main Street in Lykens for a vehicle accident with injuries. Engine 22 responded with 6, Truck 22 with 7, Utility 22 with 5, Rescue 23 with 6 and 4 additional 22 members POV. On arrival, the Utility took the intersection at Main and Division and blocked traffic and Engine and Truck 22 staged behind the accident scene while Rescue 23 set up along side the scene. The accident involved one car that had struck two parked cars. The driver was out and not injured but the passenger was removed from the vehicle and placed with Medic 6. PSP arrived on scene and requested two wreckers while the crew secured the scene. Rescue 23 was placed available, the first call for the brand new unit. After two of the vehicles were towed away the roadway was reopened and the box placed available.
Company 22 dispatched class one to the Lykens Hotel at 600 Main Street in Lykens for an automatic fire alarm. Chiefs 22 and 22-2 responded POV to the scene and Engine 22 went enroute with 3. Truck 22 held in quarters with two. On arrival of Chief 22 at a 4 story 50 foot by 75 foot brick hotel he found normal conditions. Engine 22 on arrival took side D at the FDC. Further investigation of the building found all conditions normal and the fire alarm panel in normal mode. Command placed the box in service.
2007
Commercial Structure Fire, 278 Ross Lane (Box 27-2)
Tanker 22 was dispatched to assist on a 27-2 box (Gratz) in Lykens Township for a sawmill on fire. Tanker 22 responded with a crew of two, and Chief 22, who was in the area, responded POV. A smoke header was visible from Station 22 when the Tanker responded. Upon arrival, the crew found a large building completely involved with fire. The tanker crew shuttled water to the scene from a fill site at the Gratz Fairgrounds. Companies on scene included Dauphin County Companies 27, 26, 28, and 21, and Schuylkill County Companies 65, 14, and 13. Engine 21 relocated to station 27 for the call.
Company 22 dispatched to a reported motorcycle accident in the 600 block of Main Street in Lykens. Truck 22 (in place of the out of service Engine 22) along with Engine 22-1 responded on the call. On arrival, the Truck found that the motorcycle had left the scene. The crew cleaned up a small fuel spill and went available.
On Thursday morning, September 13, 1934, at 1:30 o'clock, a truck loaded with coal to be delivered to Baltimore left the highway about three miles south of Millersburg. It crashed into a tree and burst into flames. In the impact, coal was thrown ahead of the truck a distance of thirty-five feet. The crash crushed the cab of the truck, pinning the driver, 17 year old Walter Ross of Shamokin, by the leg. The driver's helper, LeMar Hoy, attempted to rescue Ross from the burning truck. But, his efforts were in vain because the driver was pinned fast inside the cab. Hoy suffered burns of his hands and back and lacerations of his shoulder from the attempted rescue. Hoy was found following the accident walking on the highway in a dazed condition by Charles Bressi. He was taken to Millersburg by Bressi, who reported the accident to Chief of Police Stakley, who in turn summoned the Millersburg Fire Company. Upon arrival of the firemen, the flames had completely consumed the truck holding the dead body of Ross as prisoner. After the flames were extinguished, the badly burned body of Ross was taken from the wreckage. Dr. Myron Todd, of Halifax, deputy Coroner, was then notified and, after viewing the body and the wreckage, was of the opinion that the unfortunate victim was instantly killed by the accident. The body was then turned over to W.J. Minier, undertaker of Millersburg. It was the opinion of Officer Stakley that the accident occurred when both Ross and Hoy fell asleep in the moving vehicle. The truck was owned by Anna Veggiano, of Shamokin.
