Fire that started in the hay of a stable about 1 p.m. destroyed the Dauphin County Alms-House in Harrisburg on July 2, 1883. The fire consumed the large frame stable along with two horses and five mules, and then spread to the main house, a handsome three-story building with mansard roof. Because of a very strong wind, the building was soon destroyed, along with every other building on the ground except the laundry and school-house. As soon as the main building caught fire, the steward and assistants evacuated the insane department of 21 females and 17 males. All of them were saved, but one of the females was burned severely after she was out of the building and a spark ignited her clothing. The insane were taken to the state asylum, and the sick were taken to the hospital. The other residents quartered outdoors on the grounds. In the excitement, it was later discovered that twelve of the insane had fled and were missing. The loss from the fire was estimated at $200,000.
