The hotel and store kept by Edward Widdeman, in Wiconsico, was totally destroyed by fire on Monday night, August 26, 1867. The family barely escaped with what they were wearing and the things they grabbed in their flight. The contents of the store, kept in one part of the building, consisting of dry goods, groceries, etc., was also totally consumed. Mr. Widdeman lost over $500 in cash, which he had kept in a bureau. It was believed the fire was arson, because there was no fire in the house when the family retired to rest.
