The 2001 Lykens Firemen?s Carnival was held June 26th through June 30th. The year?s event featured a performance by the internationally famous Marvalettes.
The Marvelettes are one of the six most successful all-female recording acts. Their first record "Please Mr. Postman" sold more than one million records and went to No. 1 on the charts. Their other top ten hits include "Beechwood 4-5789", "Don't Mess With Bill", "Playboy", "Too Many Fish in the Sea", "My Baby Must Be a Magician", "Hunter Gets Captured By the Game", and "When You're Young and In Love."
The week?s entertainment was Liberty Hose Co. No.2 Band on Tuesday night, The Outlaws and Crazy Elmer Show on Wednesday night, The UDA Jazz Band on Thursday night, The Marvelettes on Friday night, and After Hours on Saturday night.
Entertainment in the social club was East Coast Invasion, performing music of the 50?s, 60?s, and 70?s, on Fiday night and The Sound Commission, a great variety music band, on Saturday night.
Back again that year were our Longaberger Basket stand and our Boyd's Bears stand. Longaberger Baskets could be won at the pick of a ticket! Boyd's Bears could be won with a spin of the wheel!
A parade started off the carnival on Tuesday night at 7 o'clock p.m. Thursday night was family night, when children could ride the rides from 7 to 10 o'clock p.m. for $7.00. Rides were provided by Otto?s Amusements and advanced ride tickets could be purchased at Don's Food Rite and Liberty Hose Company No. 2's Social Club.
We would like to thank the area businesses for helping sponsor the entertainment. A good time was had by everyone who came out and enjoyed the good food, games, and rides, and who helped to support the Lykens Fire Company. All proceeds raised from the carnival helped support fire prevention and protection for Lykens and its surrounding areas.
