A fire at the five-story Comfort Inn Hotel in Greenville, South Carolina on January 25, 2004, caused six deaths and multiple injuries. The fire, which started on the third floor near the back stairway, is believed to be arson. The smoke was so thick, that some guests broke windows and jumped, climbed down bed sheets, or waited for firefighters to rescue them. All deceased victims were found on the third floor. Those who were injured suffered from smoke inhalation, burns, and cuts received while trying to get out the windows.
