Relocate, Station 21 (Box 20-1)
Detail >>
Engine 22 was requested to relocate to Station 21 while Elizabethville firefighters were on the scene of a fire in Millersburg. Engine 22 responded and relocated to Station 21, where they remained without incident until released by Chief 21.

Carbon Monoxide Investigation, 662 Main Street (Box 22-1)

At the request of Chief 22 on scene, Company 22 dispatched class three to the Family Dollar Store at 662 Main Street in Lykens for reports of high levels of carbon monoxide. Engine 22 responded class three with 3 and arrived on side A. Crews vented the building using fans and took CO readings. When the readings were reduced to acceptable levels, command placed the box available.

Standby in Quarters, 560 South Second Street (Box 20-2)

Company 22 requested to go on standby in quarters by Chief 21-1 while they were working a structure fire in Upper Paxton Township with companies 20, 26, 29 and 21. 8 personnel from 22 stood by in quarters until released by command.

Medical Assist, 545 Main Street (Box 22-1)
Detail >>
At the request of Medic 6 on scene Company 22 dispatched class three to 545 Main Street in Lykens for a lift assist. Chief 22 responded POV and Truck 22 went enroute with 7. On arrival the crew assisted EMS with transferring the patient to their unit and then went available.

Structure Fire, 601 Spruce Street (Box 22-1)

The 22-1 structure box dispatched class one to 601 Spruce Street in Lykens Boro for a report of a kitchen fire with possible entrapment, bring companies 22, 23, 24, 21, 27 and Medic 6. Chief 22 responded to the scene POV and on his arrival he had a duplex 3 story wood frame house with smoke pushing out the first and second floors and one person on the front porch roof. Engine 22 responded with 4 and proceeded to the scene up South Second Street and arrived at side A with a hydrant directly in front of the structure. Truck 22 responded by way of South Street and was set up on the A/D corner. Engine 23 proceeded up Spruce Street from Main Street where they laid into the scene. Engine 24 came in South Second Street and staged behind Boyers store. Rescue 21 and Engine and Rescue 27 arrived as well as Rescue 23. Initial attack came thru the front door and they found fire around the kitchen stove extending outward to behind the adjacent refrigerator and up the wall to overhead cabinets. Fire was knocked down quickly while crews conducted primary searches of the 3 upper floors and basement of the building. Several occupants were removed from the building and the resident on the porch roof was rescued with a ladder. Power was secured to the building and crews performed secondary searches to confirm the building was evacuated. Two residents were turned over to EMS with one requiring transport. Crews checked the opposite side of the duplex building and found some residual smoke that was ventilated. Additional ventilation of the fire building was also performed. After confirming that the fire was out and there was no extension, command released most of the fire units. Command contacted Red Cross for assistance for the occupants. After packing hose command placed the box available.

AFA, 220 Church Street (Box 21-1)

Truck 22 dispatched class one to the Upper Dauphin Area high school at 220 Church Street in Elizabethville for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 4 and was canceled by command while enroute, faulty detector.

Deadliest Earthquake in History - Shaanxi, China

An 8.0 to 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck in Shaanxi, China in the late evening of January 23, 1556. The quake struck in the middle of a densely populated area with poorly constructed buildings and homes, resulting in a horrific death toll. In the city of Huaxian, every single building and home collapsed, killing more than half the residents of the city, a number estimated in the tens of thousands. In some places, 60-foot-deep crevices opened in the earth. Serious destruction and death occurred up to 300 miles away. The earthquake also triggered landslides, which contributed to the massive death toll. It is estimated that 830,000 people were killed.

Bounty Burned - Pitcairn Island, Southern Pacific Ocean

After the April 28, 1789, mutiny on the HMAV Bounty in Tonga, the mutineers, led by Fletcher Christian, visited Tubuai and Tahiti. Some of them, along with some Tahitians left Tahiti in search of a safe haven from the Royal Navy who was sure to pursue them. They landed at Pitcairn Island, where they set the Bounty on fire and destroyed it on January 23, 1790. (The mutineers were eventually caught. Four of them were hanged.)

?lesund Fire - ?lesund, Norway

A violent Atlantic storm battered ?lesund, Norway, on the night of Saturday, January 23, 1904. At about 2:30 a.m. a fire broke out in one of the westernmost buildings in town. In the high wind pummeling the coast there was no way to prevent the fire from spreading from one wooden building to the other. 850 houses burned to the ground in 16 hours. Some 10,000 of the town's 14,000 inhabitants were left homeless, having to flee to nearby communities. Only two sections of town, lying windward of the fire, escaped destruction. ?lesund was the center for production of high-grade cod liver oil. The refineries and most of the fishing boats were destroyed in the fire. This created a world-wide high-grade cod liver oil shortage. Two people lost their lives in the fire. The estimated loss was about $4-million.
1904
Grassland Fire - near Laredo, TX

On January 23, 1904, an uncontrollable prairie fire raged on the pastures about fifty miles east of Laredo, Texas. More than 100,000 acres of grazing land burned. Recent frosts had made the grasses very dry and they burned like tinder. Hundreds of cowboys made vigorous efforts to check the flames, but with-out success.

A fire broke out in a Roman Catholic school dormitory in Heusden, Belgium, on January 23, 1974. Twenty-three boys were killed.
2001
Tiananmen Square Self-Immolation Incident - Beijing, China
Detail >>
On January 23, 2001 (Chinese New Year's eve) a group of men and women attempted to set themselves on fire in Tiananmen Square, five succeeded at ignition. A man sat down on the pavement northeast of the Monument to the People's Heroes at the center of the square, poured gasoline on his clothes and set himself on fire. Moments later four more people set themselves alight. Nearby police ran to the victims and put out the flames with fire-extinguishers within a minute. Two of the people died and three were severely disfigured by the act.

Nasiriyah Hospital Fire - Nasiriyah, Iraq
Detail >>
Fire swept through the Nasiriyah General Hospita in Nasiriyah, Iraqi on January 23, 2005, killing 14 people and injuring 75 others. The blaze was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
