Engine 22 was requested to relocate to Elizabethville's Station 21 while Company 21 was out on a fire call. Engine 22 responded to Station 21 and remained there without incident until released by command.

Structure Fire, 17 Vine St (Box 21-1)

Tanker 22 was dispatched as next due Tanker in place of Tanker 21 to an apartment fire in Elizabethville. Tanker 22 was canceled before response when Tanker 21 responded.

Wires Down, 670 Main Street (Box 22-3)

Engine-22 was dispatched for a report of wires down, phoned in by Lieutenant-22. The engine responded with a crew of six, while Chief-22 and Chief 22-1 went to the scene POV. The crew arrived to find a power line, used by the Borough to supply Christmas lights, was struck and partially pulled down by a tractor trailer. The same tractor trailer had pulled down wires about 30 minutes prior to this incident in Washington Township in Loyalton. Local police were also on scene. After determining that the lines were not energized, the crew cut them and they were wrapped around the base of the two poles they were attached to. The company cleared the scene and went available.

It what would prove to be the first of many flooding calls over the next several days, company 22 alerted to flooding in the basement of 403 South Second Street in Lykens. Utility 22 responded class 3 to the address and set up a portable pump to handle the basement water, and moved on to the next address as more calls came in.

Lieutenant 22 responded to this address to check for water issues while crews were out at several locations dealing with pump details as a result of heavy rains. Finding water levels too low here to pump, he cleared the scene.

Structure Fire, 50 Reiff Street (Box 22-3)

While crews from company 22 were out pumping basements in the boro from heavy rains in the area, a call was dispatched for a report of a structure fire at the Reiff and Nestor Plant on Reiff Street in Lykens. Utility 22 responded from their pump detail to the station where the crew transferred to Engine 22, which went responding with 6. Chief 22 remained on Utility 22 and responded to the scene. Truck 22 responded to the scene, along with units from 20, 21, 23, 24, and Tower City. Initial reports were a fan in the roof above the machine shop was smoking. On arrival, Engine 22 laid a 5 inch line from the hydrant at West and Reiff to the parking lot outside the office, and Truck 22 set up on side B and went to the roof. Interior crews found a small fire in the roof area in an electrical box above a large machine, which was extinguished. A vent hole was cut and checked for extensions. After marking control, command held the box to companies 22 and 23, which performed overhaul and removed additional areas of burned wood above the electrical box. After salvage and overhaul was completed, command placed the box available.

At the request of ambulance 24-2, Company 22 dispatched class one to 251 North Street in Lykens for a medical assist. Chief 22 responded POV and Truck 22 with 7. On arrival, the crew assisted EMS with moving the patient from the home to their unit, and then went available.

Structure Fire, 107 Dietrich Avenue (Box S.C.)

Engine 22 dispatched class one in place of the out of service Truck 22 to 107 Dietrich Avenue in the village of Orwin in Porter Township, Schuylkill County, for a reported structure fire. All Porter Township companies dispatched (Muir, Orwin, Sheridan, Joliett and Tower City Boro) plus Dauphin Tanker 24 (Williamstown). Pine Grove North End also dispatched for the Ladder, along with Tower City EMS. Engine 22 responded with 5 and Utility 22 with 5. On arrival, crew found a 2 1/2 story single family structure with smoke showing from the second floor, and command 650 assigned the 22 crew with a vent of the roof on the B/C corner, which was completed. Fire was knocked down by interior crews, and the 22 and 24 crews assisted with salvage and overhaul. After control was marked and some units released, the crew assisted with repacking 5 inch before being released by command.

Commercial Structure Fire, 109 Coleman Road (Box S.C.)

Truck 22 dispatched class one to 109 Coleman Road, Hubley Township in Schuylkill County for a commercial structure fire. At this point, Dauphin County company 27 (Gratz) as well as Schuylkill County companies Sacramento, Hegins, Valley View, Joliet, Pitman, Klingerstown, Pine Grove and Muir also on the box. Truck 22 responded with 6, and on arrival, observed a 100 foot by 500 foot egg storage facility with heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof. Truck 22 took side A and set up and went to the roof to ventilate while other members of the crew laddered the building and went interior to perform suppression. Chief 22 operated the manpower pool while Chief 27 ran Dauphin County ops. Overall command was Sacramento Chief 14. The fire was difficult to get to, and additional units were called in, both because of low manpower and the excessive heat and humidity. Also dispatched to the call were Dauphin County units Rescues 21, 23, and 28, Engine 20, and Schuylkill units from Minersville Engine 528 and Pottsville Engine 62. Linglestown Air 35 was requested to the scene as well. Williamstown EMS sent a unit for rehab along with Hegins EMS. Progress Engine 32-1 was relocated to Station 21 for the duration of the call. Suppression and ventilation activities continued for several hours until control was marked and units began to be released. When command released the Truck, they returned available. Medical Assist, 464 Main Street (Box 22-1)

While Truck 22 and its crew were working a commercial structure fire in Hubley Township (see call #64) a call was dispatched in Lykens Boro at 464 Main Street for a person that was trapped under a fallen stove in the basement on the steps. Rescue Engine 32-1 from Progress which was on standby in Elizabethville station 21 responded with 3. Two company 22 members responded POV to the scene, and removed the stove from the person until the arrival of 24Q and Medic 6 and Engine 32-1. Patient was turned over to EMS and the box placed available, with Engine 32-1 returning to standby at Station 21.

High Angle Rescue, 588 Main Street (Box 22-1)

Truck 22, Rescue 23 and Engine 23 for the out of service Engine 22 dispatched class one to 588 Main Street in Lykens Boro for a person stuck in the air in a bucket truck. Truck 22 responded with 7, Utility 22 with 4, Rescue 23 with 4 and Chief 23 POV to the scene. On arrival of the Truck, the person in the bucket truck was located on the D side of the structure about 25 feet in the air. The Truck set up in the parking lot on the D side of the structure, a 2 and one half story multi occupancy apartment building about 50 by 150 feet in size. Engine 23 was placed in service and Rescue 23 staged in front of the Pizza shop. Utility 22 arrived and staged in the parking lot to the rear of the pizza shop. Lieutenant 22-1 operating the bucket successfully positioned the bucket to allow the person to exit the bucket truck and return to the ground. Command then placed the box available.

Company 22 and Engine 23 for the out of service Engine 22 dispatched class one to the Rattling Creek Apartments at 15 South Second Street in Lykens for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 22-1 responded POV from his residence across the alley from the building, a 4 story brick multi occupancy County Apartment Building. He met with the occupant of the affected apartment in the lobby and went to the third floor to investigate. He found nothing and held both units in quarters. Engine 23 and Truck 22 were holding in quarters. After determining that the alarm was false Chief 22-1 placed the box in service.

Yuengling Brewery Fire - Pottsville, PA

Fire broke out at the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on September 7, 1888. The fire started in the brewery, located at Fifth and Mahantango Streets, in the cooper's shop, when a cauldron of boiling pitch overflowed. A workman was terribly burned about the head and body. The firemen contained the flames to the cooper's department.
