Bow Mariner Explosion - Atlantic Ocean, 50 miles east of Chincoteague, VA

On February 28, 2004, the Bow mariner, a 570-foot tanker, was traveling from New York City to Houston, Texas, carrying 3.5 million gallons of industrial ethanol. In the Atlantic Ocean, about 50 miles east of Chincoteague, Virginia, the ship exploded and sank. Twenty-one of the twenty-seven crew members were killed. Six of the crew were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard helicopters.

Subway Crash - London, England

In London, England, a subway train entered Moogate tube station at 9 a.m. on February 28, 1975. The line ends at Moorgate, but the train did not slow down. It passed the platforms and accelerated through an overrun tunnel, a sand pit, and water buffer, and crashed into a brick wall. The most seriously injured people were in the first few cars that hit the wall. It was difficult to get to them through the wreckage of the other cars in the tunnel. It took twelve hours before the last survivor was rescued. It took five days before the body of the driver in the front cab was reached. He was found with the breaking mechanism in his hand. No evidence of mechanical failure was found. An investigation focused on the 56-year-old driver. There were no signs of drug use, but the delay in reaching him made it impossible to determine if alcohol was involved. some speculated that he committed suicide by crashing the subway. This was ruled out because had ?300 in his pocket, with which he was to buy a car for his daughter later that day. Other speculation is that he was had some sort of seizure or simply let his attention wander at the wrong time. No certain conclusion was ever reached. Forty-three people were killed in the crash.

The first test of a Teller-Ulam configuration thermonuclear dry fuel hydrogen bomb was detonated at the Bikini Atoll on February 28, 1954. It was the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the United States, known as Castle Bravo.

An earthquake occurred at Broussa, Turkey, on February 28, 1855,killing or wounding about 800 people. After the earthquake, a fire destroyed nearly one-third of the houses.

St George Church Fire - Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England

The Parish Church of St George, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, a Norman Style church, was destroyed by fire on February 28, 1853. A room above the south porch in the church had been used by the Society of the Clergy of Duncaster to house a library since 1722. The valuable library was also destroyed.
