A violent single car crash on Route 147, about a mile north of Halifax, killed four young people around 1 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, 1968. Trooper Joseph Pericone said the car, driven by Leonard L. Buffington, of Halifax RD, was apparently traveling south when it went out of control on a slight curve and struck a tree. The car hit with such force, that the engine was pushed into the back seat. Two of the passengers in the car were Buffington's sisters, Sallie M. Boyer and Nancy J. Boyer, from Pillow. The third passenger was Buffington's cousin, Vicki L. Howard, from Millersburg RD. All four were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Jacob Sweigart, Dauphin County Deputy Coroner. Buffington had been ejected from the vehicle, but the girls were pinned in the wreckage. A torch was used to cut the car apart to extricate the victims. Buffington was age 21, and had just been discharged from military service on February 26th, after having served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Sallie Boyer was age 19, Nancy Boyer was age 13, and Vicki Howard was age 17. All three girls were students at Upper Dauphin Area Schools.
