A mobile phone exploded and led to the death of a welder during electrical welding work at the Yingpan iron smelting plant in Shuangcheng, Gansu province, China.
The phone exploded in his pocket, causing his ribs to fracture and pierce his heart. Very high temperatures are suspected as a factor in the explosion of the lithium-ion battery, which can also be vulnerable to over-charging or short circuits.
An explosion resulting from a supernova was recorded by Chinese astronomers on July 4, 1054. It was bright enough to be visible to the naked eye during the daytime, rivaling the planet Venus. The expanding cloud of gas thrown off in the explosion is known as the Crab Nebula. It is now more than six light years across,and is currently expanding at 1,000 km/s. The total mass of ejected material is about 0.1 solar masses. The Crab Nebula is located approximately 6,500 light years away, in the Taurus constellation. Thus the cosmic event itself actually happened about 5400 BC. The Crab Nebula is the object which started Charles Messier logging non-cometary objects on his Messier Catalog.
