Company 24, Rescue 23 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 242 Vine Street in Williamstown for a chimney fire. Tanker 24 went enroute with 5 and arrived on side A with nothing visible. Rescue 23 went enroute with 2 and on arrival took side C. Truck 22 went enroute with 4 and on arrival at a 30 by 50 duplex 2 story wood frame residence took side A and laddered the front side. Crews from 23 and 22 worked the roof while 24 was in the basement at the furnace. After checking the chimney and cleaning out the flue and pipes the box was placed available.
2022
Accident with confinement, 8832 Route 209 (Box 24-3)
Engine 22 dispatched class one on the 24-3 box to 8832 Route 209 in Williams Township for an accident with confinement. Engine 22 responded with 5 and utility 22 with 2 and one member POV. On arrival the Engine took a blocking position on Route 209 and the crew went forward to assist Rescue 24. One vehicle had struck a pole and was down into a ditch. Rescue 24 had the patient extricated prior to the arrival of Engine 22. The crew stood by and assisted Company 24 until released by command.
Engine 23 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 516 Pottsville Street in Wiconisco Township for a carbon monoxide alarm. Engine 23 went enroute and Truck 22 went with 6. As the Truck was arriving on scene Command 23 placed the Truck available.
Company 22 dispatched class three to Main and Lehr Streets for a car stuck in the snow. Chiefs 22 and 22-1 responded POV to the scene, and Utility 22 responded with 4. On arrival, crew assisted the driver with removing their car from the snow and went available.
2014
Smoke in a Structure, 170 Longabach Drive (Box 21-5)
Truck 22 dispatched class one on the 21-5 box to 170 Longabach Drive in Washington Township for a report of smoke in a structure due to a faulty wood burner. Truck 22 responded with 7 and Utility 22 with 2. On arrival, the Truck took side A of a 2 story single family dwelling and was assigned the task of checking the chimney. Crew laddered the building while the boom went to the roof and pulled the chimney cap, which was blocked. Crew assisted 21 until released by Chief 21-1.
Dauphin County Communications alerted a Company 22 Chief to contact the Comm Center concerning a public safety hazard. Chiefs 22 and 22-2 responded class 3 to 530 North Street, and on arrival Chief 22 requested Truck 22 class 3 to the scene to assist in ice removal. Truck 22 responded with 5, and on arrival staged at the address and pulled a ground ladder to access the obstruction. Crew pulled down a large chunk of ice hanging from the roof line that was pushing the electrical service line away from the house. After completing the task, the Truck went available. Crew spent some time on the return trip to the station clearing several snowed under fire hydrants.
A tanker train hauling fuel oil through the capital of Cameroon, Yaound?, in mid-morning on February 14, 1998, collided with another freight train and derailed. The tanker cars were ruptured and fuel began to spill from them. A large number of local people gathered to collect the fuel oil in containers. Apparently, one of the "gatherers" was smoking a lightened cigarette at the time, and this created a flash fire, which traveled back to the wrecked tanker cars, which created a massive fireball, killing almost all the people in the area, as well as flattening local slum housing and starting numerous smaller fires in the surrounding districts. Firefighters were only able to contain, not extinguish, the blaze, which burned for several hours. The exact number of casualties was undetermined, but the final number of confirmed dead was over 120 people, with at least 130 hospitalized with terrible burns.
In Tangshan, China, fire ripped through the three-story Linxi department store during peak shopping hours on Sunday afternoon, February 14, 1993. The fire was caused by workers who were welding in the store. The inside was completely gutted, and the exterior walls were blackened, with most of the windows broken. Seventy-nine people were killed by the fire, and fifty-one people were injured.
The Stardust nightclub in the Dublin, Ireland, suburb of Artane, caught fire around 1:40 a.m. on February 14, 1981. There were 841 people attending a disco there. The fire started in a seat, possibly from a lit cigarette. Paper decorations for the upcoming Valentine's Night celebration also ignited, causing the entire building to catch fire. The attendees at both the disco and a trade union function also in the building had to try to make their escape but were hampered by a number of obstructions. Some of the main fire exits turned out to be locked with padlocks and chains. Other fire exits had chains draped about the push bars. A large number of people attempted to escape through the men's toilets, but the windows there had metal plates fixed on the inside and iron bars on the outside. Seven people died in the toilets while firefighters attempted to rescue them. In all, 48 people died and 214 were injured as a result of the fire.
At 5:48 a.m. on February 14, 1971, a train carrying workers to an iron works in Zenica, Yugoslavia was passing through the Wranduk Tunnel. It had to stop 1,000 feet from the exit as a fire had started in the engine and ignited the train's diesel supply. Passengers could not pass the engine because of the heat and had to go 4,000 feet to the other end of the tunnel to exit. Thirty-four passengers died and 113 were injured. Most victims died from gas poisoning.
