Saturday evening, August 25, 1934, at 4 o'clock, Gurney Troutman, Delbert Brown, and Misses, Veronica Nickawiska, Katherine Powell, and Corrine Powell, all of Tower City, and Miss Helen Russellavage, of Sheridan, were returning from the Holmes Safety Association picnic held at Keffers. About a mile from the picnic, the passenger car in which they were riding, driven by Gurney Troutman, skidded across the highway, crashed into a fence breaking seven posts, and turned over on the wire rope, which saved them from possible death on the steep mountain side. Miss Russelavage sustained injuries believed to be a fracture of the skull. She was admitted to the Williams Valley Hospital in Williamstown in an unconscious condition. She remained unconscious Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Miss Katherine Powell, after being given first aid at the office of Dr. David Hawk in Tower City, was admitted to the Pottsville Hospital, suffering with a fracture of the shoulder. The Others in the car escaped with minor lacerations and contusions. The sedan they were riding in was damaged considerably.
