At 9:14 AM, the Lykens fire company was dispatched to respond to the 300 Block of East Grand Avenue in Tower City to assist with a structure fire. All five Porter Township fire companies, Tower City, Wiconisco, and Williamstown fire companies were on scene. Sadly, a small child perished in this fire. The company was released at 12:21 PM.
2012
Commercial Structure Fire, 738 Pottsville Street (Box 23-1)
Companies 23 and 22 dispatched class one to 738 Pottsville Street in Wiconisco for a reported commercial structure fire at TNT Cycles. Engine 23 responded with Chief 23-2, who observed a growing column in the sky and requested an upgrade to the first alarm assignment, bringing companies 21 and 24. Truck 22 responded with 7 and Engine 22 with 3. On arrival, Chief 23-2 passed command to Chief 22 and took operations command. A further upgrade to the box was requested, bringing companies 20, 26, 27, and Perry 2 (Duncannon)with Engine 32 relocated to station 23 and Schuylkill Engine 650 to station 24. Air 35 also arrived on scene. Command was presented with a 1 story combination block and wood structure, a cycle and four wheeler shop with numerous vehicles located within and around the structure, with fire showing at least 20 feet into the air. Engine 23 led off with the deck gun until hand lines were in place, along with the roof being trenched by the Truck crew. Crews had heavy fire throughout the structure, and lines were deployed on the A, B, and C sides. The C side was breached and numerous tires were found burning in the rear corner. Crews continued with suppression activities as more relief crews arrived, eventually achieving a knockdown. Relief teams began salvage and overhaul which was extensive. Crews continued until released by command.
Local alarm on the 21-4 box dispatched class one to 4888 Route 225 for a silo fire, bringing companies 21, 26, and Truck 22. Truck 22 responded with 5 and Utility 22 with 4. On arrival, the Truck was assigned to set up and go to the top of the silo to investigate. Additional resources were called in to assist with the incident. Initially, the Truck was used to put water on the silo top to help extinguish fire while additional crews from 21 and 26 were working the inside bottom of the silo. The Truck was supplied by Engine 21 which was being fed from Tanker 21 and then Tanker 26. A farm specialist from Berks County was contacted and arrived on scene, followed by several others and eventually Harrisburg Squad 8, Rescue 1, and Air 35 were sent to the scene for the confined space team. On their arrival, they set up a crew and went to the interior of the silo and tracked the location of the remaining fire and extinguished it. The Truck re-positioned to the opposite side of its original location to provide a RIT second exit point for the entry team, but was unable to reach the area needed. Crews assisted on scene until released by command.
2015
Medical Assist - Cardiac Arrest, 329 Market Street (Box 22-1)
Company 22 dispatched class one to assist EMS with a cardiac arrest near 329 Market Street in Lykens Boro. Chief 22, Lieutenants 22 and 22-1 and Captain 22 responded to the scene, Utility 22 responded with 4 and Engine 22 with 2. On arrival, patient care was performed until the arrival of EMS. After transfer to their unit, Chief 22 placed the company available.
Company 22 and Engine 23 dispatched class one to the Lykens Hotel at 600 Main Street in Lykens for a smoke alarm activation in apartment 301. Chiefs 22 and 22-2 responded to the scene. On the arrival of Chief 22-2 he met with Lykens PD and entered the building, a 4 story 75 by 100 high rise apartment building. Chief 22 arrived on scene shortly after and they went to apartment 301 to investigate. Engine 22 responded with 4 and took the FDC on the Market Street side of the Building. Command placed Engine 23 available. Investigation found a faulty detector and the box was placed available.
Company 23 dispatched class one to 160 Market Street in Wiconisco Township for a car fire. Chief 22-2, who lives about 100 feet from that location, responded in and reported that the car was fully involved and off the road with no exposure issues. Chief 23 arrived on scene and the two chiefs attempted to extinguish the fire with dry chem extinguishers but were unsuccessful. Rescue 23 arrived on scene and using the bumper line Chief 23-1 extinguished the fire. After overhaul Command 23 placed the box available.
Truck 22 along with companies 26, 27, and 28 out of Dauphin County dispatched class one to Northumberland County, Upper Mahoney Township, 31 watershed road on a Klingerstown box for a commercial structure fire. Truck 22 responded with 7 and was canceled outside of Gratz while enroute.
