In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, Company-22 spent most of the two day period of September 18th and September 19th pumping basements, providing generator support, rescuing citizens from water emergencies, re-fueling pumps and generators, and assisting the community in dealing with the effects of the Hurricane.

Structure Fire, 306 Plane St (Box 23-1)

Companies 22 and 23 were dispatched for a reported structure fire in Wiconisco. Further details revealed that electric power, which had been out for approximately nine hours, was restored and caused surges in several locations, triggering what was first thought to be smoke in the structure at 306 Plane Street. Chief-23 investigated and found no fire. He placed the box in service.

Structure Fire, 210 Pottsville St (Box 23-1)

Companies 22, 23, and 24 were dispatched for a possible structure fire at 210 Pottsville Street in Wiconisco. Chief 23 on the scene reported no fire and placed the box in service.

Chimney Fire, 314 N 2nd St (Box 22-1)
Detail >>
Engine and Truck 22 were dispatched for a possible chimney fire at 314 North Second Street. A neighbor next door noticed black smoke coming from the chimney and called 911. Upon arrival on scene, Chief-22 advised units that it was a furnace malfunction and placed the box in service.

Fuel Spill, 601 Laurel Lane (Box 22-1)

Engine-22 was dispatched to 601 Laurel Lane in Lykens Borough for a fuel spill. Upon arrival, personnel discovered that heavy rains from Hurricane Ivan had cascaded down the mountain, entered the rear of the structure, flooded the basement, spilled the fuel oil which spread throughout the basement, and eventually exited the structure through the basement windows carrying the fuel oil with it. Personnel constructed a dike and diverted incoming water away from the building. Haz Mat piggies were used to soak up the oil on the outside of the structure. Attempts were made to contact the owner to advise of the situation. Engine-22 went available.

Medical Assist, 801 Market Street (Box 22-2)

At the request of EMS, company 22 dispatched class three to 801 Market Street in Lykens to assist with lifting an extremely obese patient, the victim of a fall. Engine 22 responded with 6, and 5 additional members responded to the scene POV. On arrival, the crew assisted Medic 6 with getting a patient from his floor to an upright position and placing him in a chair. The crew was then placed available.

Smoke in a Structure, 612 South Second Street (Box 22-1)

The 22-1 box was dispatched for 612 South Second Street in Lykens for a report of smoke in a structure, bringing Engine and Utility 22, Engine and Rescue 23, Engine 24, Rescue 21, and Truck 20 for the out of service Truck 22. Rescue 21 went enroute with 10, Engine 24 with 6, with Chief 22 responding POV. Engine 22 went enroute with 5 and Utility 22 with 2. Command held the call to Company 22, burnt food and placed the rest of the units in service. On arrival, crews set up PPV ventilation and when completed went available.

AFA, 683 Main Street (Box 22-1)

Company 22 and 23 and Engine 24 for the out of service Engine 22 dispatched class one to 683 Main Street at the Lykens Library for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 22 responded POV and Truck 22 went enroute with 7. Chief 22 arrived on scene and confirmed that contractors were working in the building and set off the system by accident. Chief 22 placed the box in service.

AFA, 50 Reiff Street (Box 22-1)
Detail >>
Company 22 and Engine 23 dispatched class one to 50 Reiff Street at the R & N Plant in Lykens for an automatic fire alarm. Engine 22 responded with 4 and was advised of a false trip and the box was placed available.
