A chimney fire at the home of George Hoffman, North Second Street, was reported at noon on Tuesday, October 12, 1948. The blaze, which for a while was considered threatening, was extinguished by members of Liberty Hose Company No. 2, who answered the call for assistance. Some damage to the property was reported.

Accident w/inj, 329 North Second Street (Box 22-1)
Engine 22 and Squad 23 were dispatched to an accident in the 300 block of North Second Street, near West Street. The engine responded and found two vehicles involved in a moderate to low speed head-on crash, with the occupants of the cars seated in lawn chairs on the side walk where bystanders had placed them. The crew assisted EMS with patient treatment and transfer to ambulances, then went available.
Truck 22 dispatched class one to 266 Clarks Valley Road in Porter Township Schuylkill County for an apartment building fire. Truck 22 responded with 5 from Station 21 where they were attending a fire prevention event. Engine 22 responded from Station 22 with 6 along with Utility 22 with 4. The Truck entered the scene from 4th Street and took a position on the C side of a 2 story wood frame building with heavy smoke pushing out the upper floors. The boom went to the roof to ventilate while the rest of the Truck crew set ladders. Engine and Utility 22 accessed the scene from 10th Street and staged on the A/D side of the building and sent crews interior packed up to the second floor to assist with suppression. After setting ladders, a Truck crew went to the basement to secure utilities. Crews continued to assist on scene until released by command.

Accident with injuries, Main and Edward Streets (Box 22-1)
Company 22 and Rescue 23 dispatched class one to the intersection of Main and Edward streets in Lykens Boro for a two vehicle accident with possible injuries. Chief 22-1 responded POV and arrived on scene and found everyone out of their vehicles with no injuries. Rescue 23 was canceled. Engine 22 responded with 4 and 4 additional members arrived on scene POV. Crews assisted EMS and PSP with scene safety and traffic control until released by command.
Engine 21 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 4314 Route 209 in Washington Township at Rite Screen for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 6 and was canceled by Command 21 while enroute.
After firing a new boiler for test purposes during its installation in the Lykens Dairy on Market Street on Saturday, October 12, 1946, a water heater exploded, seriously burning the mechanic from Scranton who was making the installation. James Phillips, a local electrician, and Harold Erdman, proprietor of the dairy, sustained minor burns.
