At an early hour on Monday, July 22, 1946, the Minnig Hotel on Main Street in Tremont, Pennsylvania, caught fire and was extensively damaged. The 75 year old three-story building contained 22 rooms and was purchased by the W. E. Minnig family in 1942. The cause of the fire was not determined, but several suspicious characters were said to have been seen around the place early in the morning. The damage was estimated at $10,000 and was partially covered by insurance. Both the Lykens and Wiconisco fire companies were among those to respond to the fire.
Company 22 was dispatched for a spill that occurred on Main Street in front of Community Banks. A flat bed truck carrying chicken parts had a 55 gallon drum fall off the back and break open on the street. Traffic driving through the spill spread the parts from the spill location through the intersection of Main and Market Streets, to a point East of Dr. Bowers office. The street was a slimy, slippery, smelly mess. Engine 22 responded and attempted to clean up the spill. Product that could be scooped up was placed in containers for disposal. Bio-Petrol was used in an attempt to get the liquid portion of the product to come off the asphalt. The Boro manager was contacted, and he delivered sand to the scene. The sand was spread on the street in an effort to soak up some of the goo. The crew cleaned up what they could, and covered what they could not remove with sand. The roadway was slippery in spots for some time after this incident, with a characteristic bad odor as well.
Engine 22 and Engine 23 were dispatched for an accident with injuries near the square in Lykens. Both engines responded, and on arrival two vehicles were found on the roadway with two patients. The crews assisted with extrication and transfer of the patients to EMS units.
Company-22 was dispatched per request of EMS on a call at 565 Main Street to set up an landing zone to transport a patient with breathing problems. Engine-22 responded with a crew of six and was advised by County to set up the LZ at the L & W Ballfield. The crew arrived at the ballfield, set up the LZ, and assisted EMS with patient transport to the helicopter. The engine then went available.
At the request of Lieutenant 22 on scene, Engine and Utility 22 dispatched class three to the Lykens road by the second wildlife turkey federation gate in the 216-8 box. Engine 22 responded with 4, Utility 22 with 2, and Chief 22 POV. PSP was also requested to the scene. On arrival, there was a 30 foot by 15 foot area along side the road with about 15 gallons of fuel oil spilled. Crew used 300 pounds of high dry and several absorbent tubes to contain the spill. When finished and the crews were returning to station, they came across a second, smaller spill of several gallons along side the road about a mile from the previous location, and used an additional 50 pounds of absorbent on that one. After completing that task, the crew went available.
Company 21, Engine 26 and Truck 22 dispatched class one to 4686 Route 209 at the CVS Pharmacy for an automatic fire alarm. Truck 22 responded with 5 and 3 members POV. The Truck was canceled by Command 21 while enroute.
A gas explosion at the Short Mountain Colliery, near Lykens, on Wednesday, July 22, 1925, painfully burned the face and hands of Leo Schmick, of Lykens, and Harry Troxell, of Gratz.
